Vol. 188 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fair Wage Clause in Government and Local Authority Contracts.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the date on which he received from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions a draft of a proposed new fair wages clause for operation in Government and local authority contracts; and whether it is proposed to introduce a new fair wages clause.

The draft referred to was received in December, 1959, but it was not accompanied by any evidence that the existing clause, which has been in operation for many years, has proved inadequate to protect the rights of workers and has given rise to serious abuses. If such evidence were forthcoming I would be prepared to consider the desirability of sponsoring the introduction of a new clause.

The Minister has not indicated to the Congress that there was no evidence.

I think the resolution was simply acknowledged.

But the Minister has not indicated that there was no evidence.

The resolution has appeared periodically over the years and, over a period like that, it would have been conveyed to the Congress that there was no evidence.
