Vol. 188 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment and Emergency Schemes in Cork.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance whether all the employment and emergency schemes listed for Cork West in the year 1960-61 were implemented.

I assume that Cork West consists of the Rural Districts of Bantry, Castletown, Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Skibbereen and Schull. All Urban Employment Schemes and schemes authorised in non-urbanised towns have been implemented. Nineteen Minor Employment Schemes, costing £2,300, were originally authorised. Consents were refused for one of these, costing £260, but three other schemes were authorised in lieu thereof and these three alternative schemes have been carried out. Three small schemes, totalling £150, included in the original list for Dursey Island were not implemented. The farmers concerned refused to permit these works to be proceeded with and the grants are now being cancelled. Seventeen Bog Development Schemes, costing £2,155, were authorised. All these have been implemented with the exception of a small road work, costing £60, which it is hoped to put in hands in the next week or two. Twenty-four Rural Improvements Schemes, costing £6,576, were authorised last year. As the Deputy will understand, the date the contribution is lodged largely determines the progress of these works. Of the five schemes not implemented, the contributions in two were not received until late in March, a third was a bridge work and the fourth was a drainage work, neither of which could be put in hands during the winter period. I shall inform the Deputy of the position regarding the fifth scheme, a road work costing £264. As regards miscellaneous schemes, one archaeological work was carried out and the position regarding minor marine works is as set out in my reply to the Deputy's Question of the 23rd March last regarding West Cork piers.

Question No. 9 and No. 10 postponed.
