Vol. 188 No. 7

Written Answers. - Merchant Navy Officers: Certificates of Competency.

40.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number and types of certificates of competency for (a) navigating and (b) engineer merchant navy officers issued in this country in each of the years 1950-1959, and the number of successful candidates in each case who went to subsequent employment in Irish ships.

An independent system of examinations for the grant of Irish certificates of competency as deck and engineer officers in merchant ships was not introduced until 1953.

In so far as the information sought is available for the years from 1953 onwards it has been compiled in tabular statements, which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, it is proposed to circulate in the Official Report.
