Vol. 188 No. 7

Written Answers. - Road Fund Grants.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will set out side by side for 1960-61 and 1961-62 in respect of Road Fund grants allocated to each county council (1) the main road upkeep grant and (2) the mileage of main roads in each county, expressing in each case the main road upkeep grant as a grant per mile; and if he will give similar particulars in respect of county road improvement grants.

The main road upkeep grants for 1961/62 which consist of the usual 40% recoupment of approved expenditure on the upkeep of main roads, will not be allocated until details of the councils' provisions under this head, and of their main road maintenance programmes are submitted to the Department.

NOTE.—Annual Road Grants for County Road Improvement were introduced in 1949-50 and were based on the mileage of county roads in each area. The total amount of any grant has since been varied upwards and downwards on a number of occasions and in general these variations were extended to the counties on a proportionate basis. A number of them have added to their mileage of county roads under the Local Government Act, 1953 and this explains why the grant per mile in some cases is now lower than in others.
