Vol. 188 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing of Married Gardaí in Sligo.

9.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that there is grave dissatisfaction among married members of the Gardaí in Sligo because of the difficulties in securing suitable living quarters for their wives and families; and what steps he is taking to overcome these difficulties.

I understand that the number of houses available for renting in Sligo is limited and that some married members of the Garda Síochána stationed at this centre are experiencing difficulty in obtaining suitable accommodation for their families.

The Commissioners of Public Works will shortly commence the adaptation of houses formerly used by prison officers so as to provide two sets of married quarters for Gardaí in Sligo and it is expected that this work will be completed by the end of the year. In addition provision has been made for the erection of eleven houses in Sligo under a scheme approved by the Government for the building of houses for the Garda Síochána by the National Housing Agency Ltd.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state when something will be done about putting these houses into a fit condition for the Gardaí? There has been grave discontent amongst the force there as a result of having to wait. Some of them have had to leave the town of Sligo to find living accommodation for themselves and their families. Those houses are there for a considerable time——

The Deputy is not asking a question now; he is making a positive statement.

As I said, the Commissioners of Public Works will shortly commence the adaptation of the houses and it is expected the work will be completed by the end of the year.
