Vol. 191 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Teachers.

20.

asked the Minister for Education how many temporary teachers were appointed in national schools in (1) County Monaghan, and (2) the Republic, in 1959, 1960 and the first quarter of 1961, and whether they (a) are trained, (b) are retired or (c) hold the Leaving Certificate.

21.

asked the Minister for Education how many substitutes for serving teachers were appointed, and their status, in (1) County Monaghan and (2) the Republic, in 1959, 1960 and the first quarter of 1961.

23.

asked the Minister for Education the number of permanent, substitute, and temporary, trained lay teachers employed in national schools on the 31st December, 1960, in Ireland (a) in boys' schools, and (b) in girls' schools.

24.

asked the Minister for Education how many principal teachers' posts became vacant in 1959 and 1960 in (a) County Monaghan and (b) the Republic; and how many were filled (a) by trained teachers, and (b) otherwise.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 20, 21, 23 and 24 together. Statistics such as those sought by the Deputy in relation to temporary and substitute appointments and appointments as principal teacher are not compiled by my Department. In order to supply them it would be necessary to assign a large body of staff for about a week to the examination of the Department's records and I am not satisfied that this would be feasible or warranted. I give for the Deputy's information the following particulars regarding the employment of teachers, trained and untrained, in National Schools as on the 30th June, 1959, and 30th June, 1960.

asked the Minister for Education in how many schools did the average attendance, or average on rolls, merit the appointment of an extra assistant, and how many of these vacancies were filled in (1) County Monaghan and (2) the Republic, in 1959, 1960 and the first quarter of 1961.

The annual statistics compiled in my Department in relation to the staffing of national schools are compiled for the purpose of estimating recruitment requirements. They show on the one hand the number of new posts created during the school-year and on the other the number of vacancies at the end of the school-year to be filled from the training colleges as a result of that year's final training examinations. Total figures only are compiled and the details are not inter-related in connection with individual posts. Therefore, the information which I am in a position to give the Deputy is that during the school-years 1958/59 and 1959/60, 151 and 223 extra posts were established. The corresponding figures for Co. Monaghan were nil and 6 respectively. Three of the latter posts were filled by trained teachers.

The figures for 1960/61 are not yet available.
