Vol. 191 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appeals Statistics.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of appeals from convictions taken to (a) the Court of Criminal Appeal and (b) the Supreme Court in the year ended 5th April, 1961; the number of convictions quashed by each of those Courts; and the amount of the costs and expenses payable by the State in respect thereof.

In the year ended 5th April, 1961, 13 appeals from convictions were disposed of by the Court of Criminal Appeal and 2 such appeals were disposed of by the Supreme Court. In one case the conviction was totally quashed, and in one other case partially quashed, by the Court of Criminal Appeal. No convictions were quashed by the Supreme Court.

The defendant's costs are payable by the State in one case, that in which the conviction was totally quashed. I am informed that in this case the defendant's have not yet been taxed and that accordingly it is not possible to state the amount thereof.
