Vol. 191 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants for Piggeries in Urban Areas.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider making grants available for the building of piggeries in urban areas.

Grants under the Farm Buildings Scheme for the erection of piggeries are available to persons in Urban Districts who are the rated occupiers of agricultural holdings situated in such districts. I am not prepared to extend these facilities to all persons in urban areas, for a number of reasons, including the risk of the spread of animal disease through the feeding of swill, and the objections to the keeping of pigs in built-up areas.

Would the Minister state what is the minimum acreage which is required to qualify for payment of the grant? I think it is four acres.

I read here the definition of an agricultural holding. It is such an involved business I am afraid I could not give it.
