Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Planting of Meath Waste Land.

17.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will consider in cooperation with the Minister for Lands having the waste land round the bog at Ballivor, County Meath, belonging to Bord na Móna, planted, with a view to relieving unemployment during the slack periods.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that all the land owned by them at Ballivor is either high bog or partially cutaway bog all of which they intend to use in due course for the production of milled peat. The Board possesses no areas of waste land at Ballivor which could be made available for afforestation.

There is an amount of cutaway bog which the Board could acquire. That would greatly relieve a very large acreage and would greatly relieve the unemployment that arises in the winter time when Bord na Móna let off men in August, September and October.

If the Deputy would make representations to the Minister for Lands, he might examine that matter, if the bog does not belong to Bord na Móna.
