Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Labourers' Cottages.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Compulsory Purchase Order scheme for the erection of labourers' cottages submitted by Meath County Council in July 1961 has yet been sanctioned.

The holding of an inquiry in relation to certain sites in this Order was deferred at the request of an objector who was ill. When the inquiry was opened on 20th February, 1962, an adjournment was necessary owing to the illness of a witness. In the circumstances I propose to deal separately with the unopposed portion of the Order and I expect to be able to give an early decision on the sites which constitute the greater part of those comprised in the Order.

Is the Minister not aware that when Meath County Council submitted the compulsory purchase order for sanction, they specifically excepted the sites that were subject to the objection and asked for Departmental sanction for the ones in respect of which there was no objection? Will he explain why the Department did not sanction that part?

There is no point in making two cuts of a loaf when one will do. If that were the only delay, and the only cause for delay, it would have been very easy to remedy.

Will the Minister say what other delays there were?

I am afraid it does not arise on the question.

There are a number of reasons and that is why the Minister will not say.

So the Deputy thinks.
