Vol. 193 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing of Milch Cows.

15.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what special steps he intends to take in the creamery areas to improve the housing of milch cows so as to reduce the incidence of bovine tuberculosis and progressively improve the standards of hygiene and production.

The grants provided by my Department for the erection of cow byres were increased by 50 per cent. with effect from 1st June last. The grant now payable is at the rate of £9 per cow accommodated, subject to a maximum grant of £135. Grants are also available for the repair of cow byres. I am satisfied that these grants provide adequate assistance to enable farmers to raise, where necessary, their standards of animal housing to such levels as might be required under the Bovine Tuberculosis Scheme or to meet the needs of hygiene and production.
