andMr. Coughlan asked the Minister for Finance whether in view of the small yield and the expense incurred in its collection he will consider the remission of revenue tax on terrier racing, football and hurling games and regattas.

I presume the Deputies have in mind the betting duty chargeable on bets laid with bookmakers at these events. I am not prepared to exempt such bets from duty.

Would the Minister consider, particularly in the case of terrier racing, which is organised for charitable purposes, that the tax of 2/- in the £, which is a revenue tax, is absolutely unnecessary and is killing the sport all over the country?

No; I am asking the Minister if he would consider this in regard to terrier racing.

I should say it is doubtful if that 2/- goes to the charity in any case.

Certainly, most of it would go to the charity because——
