Vol. 194 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Letterkenny (Donegal) Flood Relief.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount expended on the Big Isle, Letterkenny, County Donegal to relieve flooding; and if it is planned to implement a major scheme later.

A sum of approximately £170 has recently been expended in repairing breached embankments at and adjacent to Big Isle, County Donegal, by the Office of Public Works on behalf of the landholders concerned. The expenditure is being met out of funds under the control of the Land Commission. A similar arrangement is being made in respect of further repairs which are now required.

No further works are proposed at present.

While farmers are very grateful to have any repairs done at all, I, as a public representative, cannot understand how two Government Departments, the Land Commission and the Office of Public Works, were in consultation from Friday to Tuesday to see which of them would pay this £170——

The Deputy is making a speech.

I am asking why it took four days for two Government Departments to decide which of them would pay £170 for the relief of flooding on this land.

We did not hear from the Deputy between Friday and Tuesday.

The reason I could not contact the Parliamentary Secretary on the telephone was that he was travelling between London, Dublin and Limerick, but I can assure him I contacted his Department and also that his Government got plenty publicity in the local papers.
