Vol. 194 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Engineers: Training in Road-Making.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will have a training centre established for local authority engineers with a view to giving them practical instruction in modern methods of road-making.

Local authority road engineers are kept in touch with the latest developments in road making techniques through the facilities which are and will continue to be afforded to them with that objective in mind. Conferences of local authority engineers are arranged annually by me at which experts lecture on special aspects of road design and construction. Also local authorities are encouraged to send their engineers to suitable specialised courses in this country and abroad. I think that these measures and the other sources of advice and instruction open to them including the technical journals, the proceedings of the engineering institutions and the assistance of the Department's engineering advisers are sufficient to enable road engineers to keep abreast of modern developments in road making methods and that the establishment of a training centre on the lines suggested by the Deputy is not necessary.
