Vol. 194 No. 3

Committee on Finance. - Vote 20—Stationery Office.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £50,800 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1962, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Stationery Office; for Printing and Binding, and the provision of Stationery, Paper, Books, Office Machinery and other Office Supplies for the Public Services; and for sundry Miscellaneous Purposes, including the Publication and sale of Reports of Oireachtas Debates, Bills, Acts and Other Government Publications.

The main reason for the Supplementary Estimate is the need to replenish stocks of paper, envelopes and other office supplies. Provision is also required to meet the cost of a mechanical horse and trailer purchased to replace a motor truck and expenditure, in excess of the sums provided in the Vote, on books, periodicals and office machinery required for the Public Service. There was a rather large purchase of paper and prices of periodicals were higher than anticipated. Stocks have been replenished under subhead E.

There is provision here for publications including Oireachtas Debates. It is the custom to publish every five years or so a comprehensive index to the Oireachtas debates. I think the last one was published about 10 years ago or five years ago. There has not been one published recently and I wonder when in the ordinary course, it is intended to provide the general index covering a period of years? The Minister may not have the information at the moment. Perhaps he would look into it and let me know at his convenience.

It is a matter for the Dáil office but I believe there is one in preparation which will be published soon.

Vote put and agreed to.
