asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the work done by the Commission on Higher Education during the past year; and at what date he expects the Commission to make its report.

74.

asked the Minister for Education the names and qualifications of the present members of the Commission on Higher Education; the number of meetings which the Commission held during the past year; and the exact terms of reference of the Commission.

A Cheann Comhairle, with your permission I propose to take questions Nos. 73 and 74 together.

The information requested by the Deputy as regards the members of the Commission on Higher Education and its terms of reference is contained in a statement which I intend to circulate with the Official Report.

As regards the work of the Commission, I understand that during the past year, the Commission and its working parties held 58 meetings at which it considered, inter alia, the written and oral submissions of various interested parties.

It is not possible to indicate at present when the Commission's report may be expected.

Following is the statement:—

The terms of reference of the Commission are:

"Having regard to the educational needs and to the financial and other resources of the country, to inquire into and to make recommendations in relation to university, professional, technological and higher education generally, with special reference to the following:

(a) the general organisation and administration of education at these levels;

(b) the nature and extent of the provision to be made for such education;

(c) the machinery for the making of academic and administrative appointments to the staffs of the Universities and University Colleges;

and

(d) the provision of courses of higher education through Irish."
