Vol. 194 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Membership: Effect on Social Welfare Department.

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare what enquiries he has made as to the likely effect on the business of his Department of (a) full membership of the EEC and (b) association with the EEC if either is granted to this country; and what conclusions he has come to as to any consequent alterations in the work of his Department.

The revelant provisions of the Rome Treaty and the regulations so far made thereunder regarding social security which apply to the present members of the European Economic Community have been studied in my Department. The implementation here of these provisions would not present undue difficulties, and, so far as can be foreseen, would not require fundamental alterations in our social security schemes.
