Vol. 194 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Membership: Effect on Department of Health.

3.

asked the Minister for Health what enquiries he has made as to the likely effect on the business of his Department of (a) full membership of the EEC and (b) association with the EEC if either is granted to this country; and what conclusions he has come to as to any consequent alteration in the work of his Department.

Certain provisions of the Treaty of Rome would affect matters which are the concern of my Department. Included among these are the articles of the Treaty on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications and the removal of restrictions on the right to practise professions and the articles on the harmonisation of social legislation. I have made arrangements to be kept informed on developments under the Treaty on all such matters; but as consideration within the European Economic Community of action on them is still only at a relatively early stage, some considerable time must elapse before I will be in a position to make a detailed statement as to how the work of my Department might be affected by Ireland's participation in the Community.
