Vol. 195 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Price of Petrol.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the impact of the price of petrol on the economy as a whole, he will carry out an investigation into the reasons for the recent increase in the price of petrol with a view to ascertaining its necessity or otherwise.

Statutory control is not exercised over petrol prices and I do not propose to have any investigation made into the recent increase in price.

The Deputy will have seen the announcement made by the Irish Motor Traders' Association in the newspapers of 1st May, in which the increase in price of 1d. per gallon appears to be attributed to increases in wages and other costs.

Did the Minister say he had no power?

I said I did not propose to have any investigation.

The Minister said that he had no statutory control.

I said that statutory control is not exercised over petrol prices.
