Vol. 195 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prefabricated Car Parks.

20.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his Department has considered or will consider the feasibility of local authorities using on temporarily vacant sites prefabricated portable car parks similar to the Wheelwright Parking Unit adopted for use in Birmingham; and if he will make funds available to local authorities to assist them in providing such car parks.

On 18th January last I issued a circular letter to local authorities encouraging them to consider the provision of off-street car parks or assisting private enterprise in appropriate cases to provide such car parks. They were further advised that approved schemes for off-street car parks intended to improve traffic flow would rank for recoupment out of the Road Fund grants available to them. It was made clear that temporary car parks may be accepted.

The type of car park to be provided is a matter for consideration by the local authority concerned in the first instance. I am prepared to consider the feasibility and suitability of any scheme submitted.
