asked the Minister for Finance the present cost of the Civil Service, Garda Síochána and Army on the same basis as his calculations given in the Dáil on 8th May, 1957; the present comparable number of civil servants; and the percentage of such cost to Gross National Product then and now.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

NOTES:

(a)The figure for the Civil Service in the 1957 Budget Statement was derived from the civil service census. The basis of this census was changed in 1959 and the 1957 figure has been adjusted to the current basis. The 1957 figure covers approximately 28,000 civil servants as compared with 28,910 civil servants in 1962. Figures for both years are as at 1st January.
