Arrangements for the cancellation and destruction of legal tender notes and bank notes are made by the Central Bank in accordance with Sections 49, 57 and 60 of the Currency Act, 1927, as amended by the Central Bank Act, 1942. The Minister for Finance has no function in connection with the matter. I understand, however, that cancelled legal tender notes and consolidated bank notes are burnt on the premises of the Central Bank in Dublin and that notes of former banks of issue are burnt by these banks on their own premises under the supervision of the Central Bank.
As the reply to the second part of the Deputy's question is in the form of tabular statements which have been furnished by the Central Bank I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.
