Vol. 195 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage to Kildare Lands.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the damage caused to the lands of Mr. James Baker at Knockirr, Carbury, County Kildare in respect of unsatisfactory drainage work done by the Boyne Drainage District Committee; and whether in consequence thereof he will make arrangements to reimburse Mr. Baker for such damage.

No representations have been made to my office in regard to damage to Mr. Baker's land. In any event I have no function in the matter.

Has the Minister no control over the Boyne Drainage District Committee?

The Drainage Committee has nothing to do with the drain referred to by the Deputy. This drain was improved by Kildare County Council under the Local Authorities (Works) Act. The main part of the trouble is that there was no maintenance provided. The Boyne Drainage District Committee referred to by the Deputy deals with neighbouring but separate drainage districts and would not be concerned in this case.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Boyne Drainage District Committee are supposed to maintain the outfall of this drain and that it is because the outfall is blocked that the drain is not working?

This drain discharges into the Farran Well drainage district. That is part of the Boyne drainage area.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say when work on the Boyne will start?

In due course, that will be undertaken.

I suppose everybody will be dead by then.
