asked the Minister for Lands if he can take any steps to conserve the stocks of salmon and white trout in the rivers and lakes in the West of Ireland.

Fisheries policy has always been directed towards the conservation of salmon and trout stocks. If the Deputy has any suggestions to improve conservation measures I shall be glad to consider them. I should point out, however, that substantial funds have been provided in recent years for the improvement of salmon rivers and that works under the scheme have been initiated by fishery conservators in the West of Ireland.
