Vol. 196 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Ration Allowances.

56.

andMr. Kyne asked the Minister for Defence in what circumstances a ration allowance is paid to a member of the Defence Forces; to how many members of the Defence Forces such an allowance is paid; and what is the amount per day of this allowance.

Ration allowance is paid to non-commissioned officers and privates who are not in receipt of rations in kind. There are two rates of ration allowance—one of 4/- a day and the other of 3/9 a day.

Broadly speaking, the higher rate is payable to married men or widowers living with their families, whether in married quarters or outside barracks; to men on leave, and to men required by the exigencies of the service to reside outside barracks, and the lower rate is payable to men who ordinarily would be on the ration strength, but who, for reasons not related to the exigencies of the service, and at their own request, are removed therefrom.

At present 2,820 men are in receipt of the higher rate of allowance and 221 at the lower rate.

Is the Minister aware that the 3/9d. per day is only 7d. more than the cost of feeding a police dog?

It is related to the cost of the relations to the Department of Defence.

Is it not a fact that more is allowed for some of the police dogs in Dublin?
