Vol. 196 No. 18

Written Answers. - County Galway Congestion.

67.

asked the Minister for Lands what progress the Land Commission have made to relieve congestion in the village of Derryglassaun, Menlough, Ballinasloe, County Galway since a reply on this matter about a year ago.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his previous question on 2nd August last. In the meantime the Land Commission have augmented the area in their possession in Derryglassaun by the acquisition of a further 20 acres and it is hoped to have proposals for disposal of the aggregate area of 40 acres formulated this year. Moreover, an area of 31 acres is now under observation with a view to possible acquisition and efforts are continuing to secure any further lands which may become available for relief of congestion in the locality.

asked the Minister for Lands what progress the Land Commission have made to relieve congestion in the village of Boughil, Ballyforan, Ballinasloe, County Galway since a reply on this matter about a year ago when the two tenants of the Land Commission with the lowest valuations in the village got no additions of land from the lands then available for distribution.

The Land Commission are in possession of an area of 13 acres in Boughil and it is expected that proposals for its disposal will be formulated soon. At the moment, these are the only lands on hands for division in the townland but the possibility of acquiring any further lands which may become available is being kept in mind.

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply, I propose to raise Question Nos. 6 to 10 on the Adjournment.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.

In view of the normally ignorant reply given by the Minister for Agriculture on the question of the sugar exports to the United States, I should like to quote what was actually said. It is:

Mr. Dillon: May I ask the Minister if there is any agreement regarding the export of this sugar?

Mr. Smith: No.

The Minister obviously did not know that the U.S. House had passed the Bill at that time.

There was no agreement.

There was a Bill and you did not know it. You did not know what was happening about your own Department.

The Deputy is still known as the most offensive and ignorant Deputy in the House.

The disaster to agriculture.

The Brains Trust has spoken. Give him a spade and let him go out digging.
