Vol. 197 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Police Dogs.

37.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the dates on which and the places at which police dogs have been used since December, 1960, for the control of disorderly persons, as stated by him in replies of 31st October last, and the number of persons involved on each such occasion.

Police dogs have been used for the purpose of controlling disorderly persons on many occasions since they were acquired. Patrols with dogs pay special attention to areas where disorder is prevalent or is thought likely on a particular occasion to arise, and the presence of the dogteams in such circumstances usually has sufficiently deterrent effect to ensure that no disorder arises. There have also been several occasions on which the dogs have assisted in the quelling of actual disorder. Details are not readily obtainable but the records show that, on at least nine occasions on which police dogs were used, proceedings were taken against persons for disorderly conduct.

With your permission, Sir, I should like to raise the subject matter of Question No. 42 on the Order Paper for Tuesday, 6th November, 1962, on the Adjournment.

I shall communicate with the Deputy in the course of the afternoon.
