Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limited Liability Companies.

12.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate the number of limited liability companies and others which were registered during each of the past three years; and if he will take steps to ensure as far as possible that undesirable persons will not be permitted to use the name of a company as a facade for dishonest trading purposes.

The information which the Deputy requires in regard to the number of companies registered is contained in the Annual Report on the Companies Acts prepared by my Department and presented to the Oireachtas. The figures for the year 1962 are not yet available for publication.

The Company Law Reform Committee stated in their report that they found no evidence of any very substantial abuses of company law; they were satisfied that the great majority of companies were honestly conducted and managed, and they mentioned that any cases in which fraud and dishonesty did occur in the management of companies received wide publicity. They made certain recommendations intended to prevent undesirable persons from indulging in dishonest practices in connection with companies, and appropriate provisions based on these recommendations have been incorporated in the new Companies Bill which is now being considered by the House.
