Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amenities on New Housing Estates.

15.

andMr. Kyne asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to ensure that, in the planning of new housing estates by local authorities and others, provision is made for the erection of amenities, in particular, schools, simultaneously with the erection of housing.

I presume the question applies to large suburban housing estates in the vicinity of Dublin and possibly other county boroughs. Provision is, in fact, made in such cases for the reservation of sites for churches, schools, shops and open spaces so that it may be open to the authorities concerned to proceed with the projects concurrently with the provision of the houses. Where the need is indicated by the appropriate authorities, sites are also reserved for libraries, dispensaries and other community facilities. The erection of the buildings is a matter for the authorities concerned and the timing of the work is generally outside my control.
