Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Land Purchases by Non-Nationals.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has considered the possibility of increased purchasing by non-nationals of land in this country, should Ireland join the Common Market; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure that this undesirable situation does not arise.

The general position regarding the purchase of agricultural land in this country by non-nationals is being kept under constant review, having regard to the positive steps already taken by the Government to discourage such transactions.

Whilst it is not yet possible to say what the precise position will be in the event of Ireland's accession to the European Economic Community, consideration is being given to the practical measures which may prove feasible.
