Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Traffic Regulations.

40.

asked the Minister for Justice the reasons for the delay in the submission by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána for confirmation by the Minister for Local Government of new traffic regulations for Wexford; and at what date it is expected that such regulations will be submitted.

Traffic bye-laws for Wexford were made in 1955 but were not formally brought into force because the local authority were unable to see their way to provide the money to put up the requisite traffic signs. The signs were put up in November, 1961, but by that time the new Road Traffic Act was in force and bye-laws made under the old Act could not then be brought into force.

The police do not consider that the 1955 bye-laws are appropriate to-day, and proposals for new bye-laws are being examined. This involves, at local level, consultation with officials of the local authority, and it also involves detailed examination by the Traffic Section attached to Garda Headquarters. As a result of the passing of the 1961 Act, 40 or more sets of traffic bye-laws affecting different cities and towns have to be made, each involving detailed consideration. Some of them were in hands before the Wexford bye-laws. I understand that it is likely to be at least some months before the bye-laws for Wexford will be ready for submission to the Minister for Local Government. Before they are submitted, they will have to be sent, formally, to the Wexford Corporation for consideration and the length of time the Corporation takes to consider them will also affect the position.

Will the Minister say if they have been formulated by the Commissioner yet?

Not finally.
