Vol. 201 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Railway Employees.

35.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power how many of the salaried staff over sixty years of age became redundant under the Transport Act, 1958 prior to 31st December 1959; the numbers in each case in respect of CIE and the Great Northern Railway; how many of those have since died; how many still await the decision of the arbitrator to fix compensation; and when a decision may be expected.

I am informed by CIE that the numbers of salaried staff of over sixty years of age who were retired with redundancy compensation under the provisions of the Transport Act, 1958 and the Great Northern Railway Act, 1958 prior to 31st December, 1959, were 18 employees of CIE and 30 employees of the GNR. Of these employees, two of the CIE employees and three of the GNR employees have since died. I am also informed that in one case a decision by the standing arbitrator on an appeal submitted to him in regard to the amount of compensation payable, is awaited. In the meantime the appellant is being paid compensation at the rate calculated by the Board of CIE. I have no function in regard to the time taken by the arbitrator to reach a decision.
