The balance in favour of the Cork County Council on revenue account at 31st March, 1962, was £730,225.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, at 31st March, 1962, Kerry County Council had a credit balance; and, if so, how much.

The balance against Kerry County Council on revenue account at 31st March, 1962, was £63,875.

56.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, at 31st March 1962, Limerick Corporation had a credit balance; and, if so, how much.

The balance against Limerick Corporation on revenue account at 31st March, 1962 was £16,155.

Would the Minister say what steps are taken, where a very large credit balance exists, to ensure that that money is earning interest or are such steps taken?

The first thing that would concern me in such happy circumstances is how best it might be used in its redistribution to keep down the rates or to reduce them—I mean the rates in the £, not the rates on interest.

Would the Minister not agree that in most cases the credit balance occurs because the departmental cheques do not arrive until 31st March?

I cannot see that the delay in arrival would affect credits; it might affect debits.

The Minister is well aware they are shown in two books.
