asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of licences that have been applied for for mining purposes in West Galway, the nature of such mining and the exact location.

Five applications for mining facilities are under consideration in my Department at the moment, but I regret that I cannot give any information on these applications at this stage.

In addition, four State mining leases have been granted over four locations in West Galway all in respect of marble and other minerals. The areas over which these leases have been granted are Barnanoran, Creggs, Tievebreen, and Ungwee.

A State mining permission allowing the removal of a maximum of 100 tons of serpentinous marble has been granted in respect of lands at Glencoaghan.
