Vol. 203 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legal Diary.

60.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the part played by officers of his Department or of the Courts in the publication of the Legal Diary; whether proofs of the Diary are read by Court officers prior to publication; and what steps are taken to indemnify lawyers and litigants against losses arising by reason of mistakes, or delays, in the delivery of the Legal Diary.

Officers of the courts supply the publishers of the Legal Diary with the necessary material and every reasonable care is taken by them to ensure accuracy.

I am unaware of any case in which a loss arose by reason of a mistake in the Diary or delay in delivery.

61.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice, with reference to the new arrangement for the publication of the Legal Diary, whether tenders were invited; and what steps were taken to ensure that, as far as possible, neither delays in publication nor mistakes would occur.

The answer to the first part of the question is "Yes." In regard to the second portion of the question the publication has, in consultation with the Incorporated Law Society, been entrusted to a reputable firm who are fully aware of their obligations.

62.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the nature of the patronage of the Stationery Office under which the Legal Diary is published, and the part played by the Stationery Office in the said publication.

The Stationery Office, as the central organisation for purchasing publications required in the public service, buys a substantial number of copies of the Legal Diary for use in legal offices of the Civil Service, and accordingly represents one of the largest groups of purchasers of that publication.
