Vol. 203 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Motor Mechanics.

63.

asked the Minister for Justice why an interview has not been arranged to fill the vacancies for motor mechanics at Garda headquarters.

It is not correct to say that interviews for these posts have not been held. On 16th and 18th February, 1963, advertisements for motor mechanics were published in the daily newspapers. One hundred and twenty-four applications were considered by a Garda Board, appointed by the Commissioner, who rejected 84 on the grounds of "no qualifications, lack of training and experience or below standard required".

The 40 accepted candidates were invited to the Garda Depot for bench test, interview, and medical examination. The appointments of the five best qualified candidates will be made shortly by the Commissioner with the consent of the Minister pursuant to article 7 of the Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1945.

Can the Minister indicate why all the applicants did not come before the board, in view of the fact that some of them were as eligible——

I have indicated that 84 were ruled out by the board on one of the following grounds: no qualifications, lack of training and experience, or being below the standard required.

Cod, and proper cod.

Just because the Deputy's fellow was not selected?

Just because the Minister's fellow was.

Is that an admission that the Fianna Fáil fellow was?
