Vol. 203 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming Pools.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of plans for the provision of swimming pools by Dublin Corporation in the districts of (a) Ballyfermot and (b) Walkinstown; and whether he will indicate the location and date of provision of this desirable amenity in the areas named.

I am not aware of any definite plans for the provision of swimming pools by Dublin Corporation in the districts of Ballyfermot and Walkinstown. Plans have been submitted to my Department for the provision of a swimming pool at Crumlin and have been approved in principle. I understand that when this pool has been erected, and some experience gained in its operation, the Corporation intend to provide pools in other areas remote from the sea, but that the location of these has not yet been determined.

Does the Minister not agree that it is something that is to be deplored that in this capital city the citizens have only one public bath, in Tara Street, and would he not think that it is part of his duty and responsibility to draw the attention of Dublin Corporation to the urgent need for the provision of such facilities in large workingclass residential areas such as Ballyfermot and Walkinstown? Might I, with respect, suggest that the Minister should excite the somnolent members of Dublin Corporation to that extent?

To a large degree, I agree with Deputy Dunne, but I would point out that I have already gone on record on many occasions advocating that swimming pools should be provided and I hope to live to see what Deputy Dunne wishes.
