Vol. 205 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Agricultural Workers.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what arrangements are being made for compensating or resettling the thousands of agricultural workers rendered redundant each year as a direct result of mechanisation and improved methods of work on farms.

I assume that the Deputy has in mind the recent publication of the report of the Inter-Departmental Committee on Re-training and Re-settlement.When publishing that report, the Government indicated their intention to obtain the views of interested bodies before coming to decisions on the recommendations.

Is the Minister aware that there are other statistics which show that the number of people leaving the land every year is increasing? Will he bear that in mind?

I think the committee have had regard to all these matters and the various agricultural bodies will be included in those to be consulted.

I thought you were ruling them out of everything.

I did not know you were on that side.

In this instance, I am.
