Vol. 206 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Parole for Prisoners.

73.

asked the Minister for Justice whether it is proposed to operate a system of parole for certain prisoners for the Christmas season; and, if so, if he will indicate its nature.

It is a traditional practice for the Minister for Justice, at the approach of Christmas, to review prisoners' sentences and in well-conducted, deserving cases to grant an amelioration of sentence.

This year I have decided to release on 23rd December 27 well-conducted deserving prisoners whose sentences will expire within a week or so of that date; in addition, I have decided to grant 32 prisoners temporary release from 9 a.m. on 23rd December to 6 p.m. on 1st January. Temporary release is governed by statutory conditions requiring the person concerned to be of good behaviour and sober habits and to return to complete the sentence at the end of the period of parole.
