Vol. 207 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Circulation of Farthings.

8.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that some Dublin bakeries, because of the shortage of farthings in circulation, have had to print at their own expense credit notes of the value of one farthing to facilitate shopkeepers and customers in bread sales; if he will state the number of additional farthings released to the public for general circulation since the introduction of the turnover tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in reply to previous questions, the Central Bank maintains a stock of farthings adequate to meet demand. I understand that 30,720 additional farthings have been issued to the commercial banks at their request since 1st November, 1963.

Is the Minister aware there is a widespread rumour that the price of bread was about to be increased this week and that the Minister for Industry and Commerce requested that such increase should be deferred?

Rumour, as the Deputy should know, is a lying jade.
