Vol. 207 No. 12

Committee on Finance. - Vote 20—Stationery Office.

I move:

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £82,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1964, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Stationery Office; for Printing and Binding, and the provision of Paper, Publications, Office Machinery and other Office Supplies for Public Services; and for sundry Miscellaneous Purposes, including the publication and sale of Reports of Oireachtas Debates, Bills, Acts and Other Government Publications.

This supplementary sum is required to meet an additional expense from printing, paper, publications and office equipment for public services. These will be offset in part by increased appropriations in aid. The total increase in the subhead comes to £93,500. Printing and binding have been more than was anticipated at the beginning of the year on account of a greater increase in the requirements and in the speeding up of deliveries to the various Departments. We also had to purchase more paper for printing envelopes and notepaper and so on, and this accounts for £40,000 of the Supplementary Estimate. An increase in the price of books and periodicals accounts for £2,000. Against that, there has naturally been an increase in the appropriations in aid by increased sales of £11,500.

Has the price of raw paper gone up or down?

It has increased somewhat.

Can the Minister say by how much?

I could not give the percentage increase.

Would the Minister drop me a note at his convenience?

Yes, I shall.

Vote put and agreed to.
