Vol. 208 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expulsion of Missionaries.

14.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he has any information about the expulsion of missionaries from the Sudan; if the Government have made any representations to the Government of the Sudan on the expulsion of missionaries, including priests and nuns; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On this occasion as on previous occasions involving action directed against missionaries in the Sudan, contact was made with representatives of the Sudanese Government and we appealed to them not to proceed with the proposed expulsion. We also requested that the personal dignity and rights of missionaries be respected.

Can the Minister say if there was any reply from the Government of the Sudan?

No, it was an informal approach. There was no formal note.

Was there any indication as to what action they might take?

No, but we know what has happened.
