Vol. 208 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dimensions of Public Service Vehicles.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the legal maximum length and width of mechanically propelled public service vehicles.

The legal maximum length and width of such vehicles are 36 feet and 8 feet 2½ inches respectively.

Could the Minister tell me how long this order in regard to 36 feet has been law?

This would have been indicated in the Road Traffic Act Regulations, that is, the Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles Regulations of 1963 and they became effective, so far as I remember, in October or November last.

Therefore it is only recently that this order became law. Is the Minister aware that CIE has ordered a large fleet of 36 feet long buses and would the Minister consider that these long buses are conducive to road safety?

That is an entirely separate matter.

As long as they do not exceed it, I am not concerned.
