Vol. 208 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Sewerage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has yet received proposals for a sewerage scheme along the line of the canal to drain the area on the Dublin side of Clondalkin and Palmerstown; and, if not, if he will request Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council to have this scheme expedited.

No drainage proposals have been received in my Department involving the area east of Palmerstown. A proposal was received from Dublin Corporation for a new drainage scheme along the route of the Grand Canal which would include provision for the general area on the Dublin side of Clondalkin. This proposal has been referred back for reconsideration by the Corporation. Temporary provision for this area is also included in the Dodder Valley drainage scheme which has been submitted to my Department by Dublin County Council and is under consideration at present.

Is the Minister aware that in this area mainly, nine industries had to be turned down less than two months ago? I would ask him to intervene in this matter because it has been going on for so long and apparently nothing is being done about it. More and more industries will have to be turned down and, unfortunately, some of them are leaving the country altogether because they cannot become established there.

I would certainly sympathise with the Deputy and the people of this area if this, in fact, is true, but I can assure him that it is not through any lack of thought or work on my part that these drainage proposals are so far behind at the moment.

andMr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Local Government if plans have reached his Department for what is known as the Dodder Valley sewerage scheme; if he will state the date on which he received these plans; and when he expects to be in a position to sanction them.

A preliminary report on the Dodder Valley sewerage scheme was submitted to the Department on 21st September, 1963, and supplementary reports were received on 27th and 30th October and 27th December. This is a major scheme and the complex technical considerations have been under close examination in my Department since January last. I hope to be in a position to give a decision on it in the very near future.
