Vol. 208 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Acquisition by Non-Nationals.

69.

asked the Minister for Lands how much land has been acquired by non-nationals in the State over the past three years.

The Register kept by the Land Commission under the procedure authorised by Sections 33, 34 and 35 of the Finance Act, 1961, shows that from 1st August, 1961 to 11th April, 1964, a total of 18,523 acres was purchased by or leased to non-nationals subject to payment of 25 per cent stamp duty.

In addition, 4,398 acres were acquired for purposes of industry other than agriculture; and 5,980 acres were acquired for other purposes but were exempted from the higher rate of stamp duty under the relevant provisions of the Finance Act.

Could the Minister tell the House if he is always aware of the fact when non-nationals acquire land in this country, that he has means of being so aware in his Department? In other words, are the facts he has given me the full facts?

Already, on many occasions, I have so assured the House, that since the passing of the Finance Act, 1961, we have the full figures.
