Vol. 208 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Addressing of Dublin Letters.

16.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that, notwithstanding notices issued by the Dublin County Council to occupiers of houses at Beechpark Road, Blackrock, County Dublin in November 1963 advising occupiers of the numbering and naming scheme for their road, letters have since been addressed by the county council to occupiers of the houses in question addressed to old addresses which did not correspond to those officially notified in November last; and that as a consequence letters have been delayed and have gone astray in the post; and if he will have steps taken to ensure that letters are properly addressed in future.

I have no information concerning the delay or non-delivery of letters in the area mentioned in the Deputy's question. The naming and numbering scheme was introduced by the Dublin County Council for a number of housing estates to avoid the duplication of names and confusion in numbering which led to difficulty in identification. I understand that some residents do not like some of the new names and that representations from them are being considered by the council. I am informed that great care is taken by the council to have their correspondence with the residents addressed in accordance with the new scheme and that no complaints about delay or non-delivery of letters have been received by the council.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Minister aware that the county council has sent out letters to the wrong addresses, using the old address instead of the addresses which they, last November, formally directed the occupants to use in future, and will the Minister ensure that steps will be taken in the local authority in question to notify all sections of the Dublin County Council as to what the new addresses are, so as to avoid further confusion?

I have already been in touch with the council and, as I have indicated to the House, there is no evidence by way of complaints to the council, that what the Deputy states here has, in fact, taken place but the Deputy can take it that the interest I have displayed by querying the council will, I feel, have the desired effect, if such is needed.

Mr. Ryan

I can assure the Minister that there was one such complaint, because I was shown it.
