Vol. 209 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariff Rates on Towellings.

13.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that recent reductions in the tariff rates on towellings here have had an adverse effect on employment in this industry, for the reason that when the price of articles of foreign manufacture in this trade comes close to the price of the Irish-produced article, and when there is great variety of designs available to importers, the constantly new and exclusive appearance of the foreign article tempts the Irish housewife to buy the foreign article; and what action he proposes to take to remedy the matter.

I am not aware that the position is as suggested by the Deputy. Imports of towelling are insignificant, and it is evident that the protection which the industry enjoys is adequate.
