Vol. 216 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Safe Loading of Lorries.

64.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions in each of the past two years in respect of failure to comply with the regulations which require loads on lorries to be fixed securely.

65.

asked the Minister for Justice if, having regard to the many incidents of blocks and bricks falling from lorries on to the public roadway thereby causing danger to users of the roadway, he will ensure that the regulations which require safe loading of lorries are rigidly enforced.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 64 and 65 together.

The Garda have instructions, issued as recently as August last, to pay particular attention to the manner in which loads are carried on vehicles. Separate statistics of the number of prosecutions brought in respect of improperly loaded vehicles are not kept and individual records of prosecutions would have to be examined to extract them. Their value would not be commensurate with the work involved in doing this.

The Minister is aware that his colleague, the Minister for Local Government, admitted last week he was aware of several incidents of this kind? Perhaps the Minister would ensure that the regulations are enforced?

I have issued instructions to enforce them.
