Vol. 217 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Relations Legislation.

86.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to announce proposals for revised industrial relations legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Preliminary discussions about our industrial relations machinery have been held with employer and labour organisations. I am pressing for an early resumption of these discussions and when the matter has been fully considered, I hope to introduce whatever amending legislation may be necessary.

Can the Minister say when the discussions may be resumed?

They are overlapping with other discussions I am having with the same groups but both sides have indicated that they are almost ready to get down to discussing the machinery of industrial relations, so that I imagine it will be within the next couple of weeks.

Can the Minister say when he last had discussions with these two groups?

Last week.

On the subject matter of this question?

We touched on this last week. A prior meeting had been held with my predecessor and I contacted them since and they indicated they were not yet ready to resume discussions.

Did the Minister say he discussed revised industrial legislation with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions?

No, we touched on it. The Congress were unable to meet me but discussions will soon be taken up again.
