Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Legislation.

187.

asked the Minister for Health when he proposes to announce the details of his new health policy; and when it is hoped that he will introduce legislation which he promised in this matter.

Mr. O'Malley

Certain aspects of my comprehensive examination of the health services remain to be completed before any announcement can be made of the changes which may be proposed by the Government.

Any legislation required would not be introduced until there has been general discussions with the many interests which will be concerned in the proposals. The Deputy will appreciate that it is too early for me to attempt to give a date on which such legislation might be introduced.

188.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that, following his statement some time ago that he proposed to institute a health scheme which would include a choice of doctor for all income groups and the consequent dismantling of the present dispensary system, the South Tipperary County Manager decided not to proceed with the erection of a new dispensary and doctor's residence at Kilsheelan, Clonmel, County Tipperary, which was then in an advanced stage of planning; if he will now state the position regarding his proposed new scheme; and when it will be introduced.

Mr. O'Malley

I have at no time mentioned a proposal to institute "a health scheme which would include a choice of doctor for all income groups". I have, however, indicated earlier to the House that consideration is being given to the introduction of a choice of doctor in the general medical service for the lower income group, in so far as that may be practicable.

I am aware of the manager's decision regarding the proposed dispensary and residence at Kilsheelan.

On the last part of the Deputy's question, I would refer him to my reply today to the question put down by Deputy Oliver J. Flanagan.
